Pikku Syöte is located in centre of North Ostrobothnia, in the middle of Finland, about 145 km east of the city of Oulu (geographic coordinates: 65°38'N, 27°42'E, antonym.hatching.barrier). Pikku-Syöte is a local nature and ski centre. Please refer to their pages for more information.
There are many flights to Oulu (OUL) from Helsinki (HEL) by Finnair, Norwegian and possibly others. Furthermore, you can fly to Oulu from Stockholm (ARN) by SAS and possibly others.
There are also many train connections between Helsinki and Oulu, of which the very comfortable night trains are an attractive option esp if you otherwise have to spend a night in a hotel before or after the Radar School. Please check www.vr.fi for information. Reservation (via same page) is highly recommended.
The latest train to make it on time will leave from Helsinki on Sunday, 11th Aug, at 23:13 and will arrive in Oulu 08:10 on Monday morning (12th Aug).
From the airport, take the bus Line 8 or Line 9 into the centre of Oulu. Note that Line 8 is more efficient for going to the railway station. For most downtown hotels, go to "Kaupungintalo P" (City Hall (north)); for the railway station, go to "Linja-autoasema E" (Central Bus Station (south)).
Important: Oulu buses do not accept cards! Make sure you have cash (EURO) available, preferably coins or small notes, do not present the bus driver with EUR 50 notes! The one-way ticket you need from the airport to the centre is a "AB", which costs 5.80 EUR.
Monday-morning arrivals: if you arrive on Monday morning (12th Aug) at Oulu Airport, you must catch the Line 8 departing at 07:40 from the airport. If you cannot make that bus, take a taxi to the railway station. If you come by bus to the railway station in the morning, here's an aerial photo that will help you find the shuttle.
The fee for the radar school includes a shuttle bus departing from Oulu at 09:00 on Monday, 12th August, and returning to Oulu at approximately 15:00 on Saturday, 17th August. (see here what else is included in the fee)
Finland is a Nordic country, which celebrated 100 years of independence on 6th December 2017. Finland is a member of the European Union since 1995. The capital city is Helsinki, located at the Gulf of Finland on the southern coast. The local currency is Euro () and the official languages are Finnish and Swedish (in the northernmost part of the country, Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi and Skolt Sámi are also recognised as minority languages). Most people understand and are able to communicate in English as well. The Finnish population is currently just over 5.5 million inhabitants, and the total land area of the country is 338,424 km2.
The Radar School will take place in late summer in 2019, just at the end of the Polar Day when the White Nights of the Arctic Summer end and the northern lights return. During the week of the school, there's just the first chance to see the northern lights.
